This Cookie & Similar Technologies Policy explains how Nesktop uses cookies and similar storage technologies (browser local storage, session storage, and extension storage) on our website, web app, browser extension ("Extension"), and desktop browser. It explains what each technology does, how long it lasts, and how you can control or withdraw your consent.
You can Accept, Reject, or Customise your choices at any time through our Cookie settings. Withdrawing consent for optional technologies does not affect the strict necessity of essential storage.
1. What Are Cookies and Similar Technologies?
- Cookies: Small text files stored on your device by your browser. They can be session cookies (deleted when you close your browser) or persistent cookies (remain until cleared or they expire).
- Browser local storage: Persistent key-value storage used by the webapp to store preferences, feature toggle states, cached layout data, and authentication tokens on your device. It is not automatically cleared when you close your browser.
- Browser session storage: Temporary key-value storage used during a browsing session for session-specific data. It is cleared when you close your browser tab or window.
- Browser extension storage: Storage managed by the Nesktop Browser Extension within the browser's extension sandbox. It stores the Extension's own settings, cached data, and paired access token. It is separate from website cookies and website local storage.

Notes:
- The exact browser storage key names may evolve as the Service is updated. Users can inspect their current browser storage (via browser Developer Tools) to see the actual values stored by the Service.
- There is no confirmed Nesktop first-party authentication cookie set by the current webapp. The webapp uses browser local storage for session tokens (
nesktop_token_v2,nesktop_user_v2). Third-party identity providers (such as Google OAuth) may set their own cookies or storage on their respective domains under their own privacy and cookie notices. - We do not use cookies for marketing or advertising purposes. No marketing or advertising cookies are set by Nesktop.
- We do not use third-party tracking cookies for cross-site advertising.
3. How to Manage Cookies and Storage
Cookie Settings (Accept / Reject / Customise)
When you first visit the Service, you are presented with a cookie consent banner that lets you:
- Accept All: enable all technologies, including optional analytics storage.
- Reject All: decline optional analytics storage; only strictly necessary and preference technologies will be used.
- Customise: choose which categories of technologies you wish to enable or disable.
You can change your choices at any time by clicking the "Cookie settings" link available in the Service footer or settings area. Withdrawing consent for optional analytics does not affect the lawfulness of processing based on consent before its withdrawal.
Your Consent Choices Are Stored on Your Device
Your cookie preference selections are stored in your browser's local storage. This means:
- If you clear your browser's local storage (via browser settings, privacy tools, or clearing all site data), your consent choices are reset and you will be prompted again on your next visit.
- Using a different browser or device, or browsing in private/incognito mode, will present the consent prompt again because preferences are stored per-device, per-browser.
Do Not Track (DNT) and Global Privacy Control (GPC)
Nesktop respects DNT and GPC signals. When a valid DNT or GPC signal is detected, optional analytics collection is disabled for that session and only strictly necessary technologies are used.
Browser Settings
You can also control cookies and storage through your browser settings:
- Block all cookies: may prevent sign-in and break core functionality.
- Clear cookies and site data: will sign you out and reset your preferences.
- Block third-party cookies: not applicable — we do not use third-party cookies.
- Manage extension storage: managed through your browser's extension management page (usually chrome://extensions or about:addons).
Blocking strictly necessary technologies will affect the Service — for example, you may not be able to sign in or your preferences may not be saved.
4. No Optional Analytics Before Consent
Optional analytics storage is not set or read until you affirmatively consent (or, in jurisdictions where consent is not required, until you have been informed and not opted out). Until then, only strictly necessary and preference technologies are used. The analytics system does not record your consent on the server; consent decisions are stored and enforced entirely on your device.
5. Extension Storage vs. App Local Storage vs. Website Cookies
- Website cookies and local storage are set by the Nesktop webapp (https://nesktop.com) and are managed through your browser's cookie/site-data settings.
- Extension storage is set and managed by the Nesktop Browser Extension using the browser's extension storage API (chrome.storage or equivalent). It is separate from website cookies and is not cleared when you clear website data. You can manage it through your browser's extension settings.
- Desktop browser local profiles (account profiles, browser history, settings, offline cache) are stored in the application's local data directory. Account tokens use operating-system secure storage when available.

This section is extension-specific. The Extension does not set cookies like websites do.

1) Does the Extension set cookies?
The Extension itself does not set HTTP cookies in your browser in the way websites do. It uses browser extension storage (chrome.storage or equivalent), which is separate from website cookie storage.
2) Why cookies may still be involved
Nesktop is a web app. When you sign in on https://nesktop.com, the website may use essential cookies (or similar session mechanisms, such as session tokens in local/session storage) to keep you logged in. To support automatic sign-in state sharing, the Extension may make requests to Nesktop endpoints (for example, GET /api/auth/me) that rely on your existing authenticated session with the Nesktop webapp. The Extension itself does not create or manage those cookies.
3) Types of storage used by the Extension
The Extension uses browser extension storage for:
- Your toggle settings and preferences
- Cached UI and layout data
- Paired access token (obtained after you explicitly pair the Extension with your account)
This storage is managed through your browser's extension management page and is not cleared when you clear website cookies or site data.
4) How to control
- Extension toggles: you can turn individual features on or off from the Extension's popup or settings page.
- Uninstall the Extension: removes all local extension storage.
- Cookie settings on the website: manage website-level cookie preferences through the webapp's Cookie settings.
- Browser settings: manage website cookies and site data through your browser's privacy settings. Logging out of Nesktop or clearing site data will remove session cookies according to your browser's controls.
